Dear Friends and Neighbors, If you have been reading the Free Lance-Star in the last month or so, you will notice the paper’s increased push for raising the gas tax. The hypocrisy of the paper is evident when they have yet to ask why Governor Kaine, who ran on a campaign that pledged to veto any transportation tax until there was a “lock box” on the transportation fund, isn’t establishing a policy that ensures a priority of our roads. In his first year as Governor, Kaine proposed to take $180 million away from transportation. He continues to introduce more programs that drain our already dwindling budget. If the gas tax is raised, there is no guarantee that any of that tax money will go toward our roads. In fact, Governor Mark Warner authored the largest tax increase in Virginia’s history. With that $1.2 billion hike, not one dollar went to transportation. Until there is a mechanism in place to ensure those transportation tax dollars will go toward roads, we should refuse to be goaded into believing the old song and dance that there just isn’t enough money. Anecdotally, I was pumping gas at Wal-mart a few days ago. There was a guy next to me pumping gas into his economy car. He had on his Wal-mart uniform and you could tell he worked in the tire/service department. I asked him what he thought of the gas prices (which on that day, they were $3.35; just five days later they are at $3.50). He said, “They’re terrible!” I then asked, “What would you think if our legislators raised the gas tax by 10 cents per gallon?” He replied, “I’d have to get a part-time job just to pay for my gas!” You may disagree with me on the gas tax and you may think it’s a fair way to raise money for roads. I would urge you to take a look at the budget, and see if there’s any waste. Are we really making our roads a priority? If we raise this tax, have we put a mechanism in place that ensures that money will go to improving our roads? Just a few things to think about. Remember, you can make a difference!
